This project stemmed from a desire to understand the breakup of my first relationship which came as a big shock to me. In order to meet with as many gay couples as possible in an effort to get to know what made them tick, I set about making these portraits.
In the end they numbered about 30-35 and were of people I got to know through a social circle in West London with a few exceptions. Later on this group of people were to be hard hit by AIDS.
This project has never been exhibited at all. For some reason, curators found it oppressive. Now the pictures have acquired a certain sociological resonance as it's now more than twenty years on.
